from whence i came

parents

another oldie, from the 2000-2002 sketchbook.

this was an initial sketch for a comic i submitted to BUST magazine (never printed). i forget what the theme of the issue was. anyway, this is a drawing of my parents, circa that's-me-in-my-mom's-belly. the comic was something about how my parents' mass consumption of david bowie music while i was in utero resulted in me having excellent ziggy stardust hair when i was born (actually happened). i'm not sure where the finished comic is, but i love this drawing.

banjo serenade

two man gentlemen band flyer

drawn for a show my friend is setting up. are you in richmond, virginia? if so, you should most definitely check this out. july 12! a thursday! what else are you gonna do but kazoo?

and check out the two man gentlemen band anyway, because they're excellent and they are fun to draw: http://www.two-man-gentlemen-band.com/

drawn in ink on bristol with watercolor shading. look for more old timey drawings and watercolor shading in the future: i really like it.

in honor of the hot weather

free_show

in 2002 i either had a devil-may-care attitude about flashing the neighbors or was pretty forgetful about closing the blinds before disrobing.

a note to any potential voyeurs: this was at my old apartment, where the lawn seating was plentiful. this apartment's bedroom is three floors up and facing pavement, so unless you befriend the next door neighbors and stand on their roof, you're SOL.

i think this is the last of the scantily-clad posts for a while.

so maybe you want an actual comic

manhattan_stargazing

file under: this really happened. it's from my 2000-2002 sketchbook and appeared in RHS #6.

this was a pretty magical weekend, which included meeting cheryl and lauren in the city, heading back to cheryl's place in nj, driving to the x-games in philly (and chasing bucky lasek through the staples center), hanging out in nyc again and seeing rock stars, and i'm sure there was even more.

dave grohl looks exactly the same in real life as on tv. melissa is even more gorgeous in person, she kind of sparkles.

during college it felt like i went to nyc a ton (or maybe i just made the absolute most of my visits), and i really miss that. my mom and i are planning to go to the city this summer to check out the garment district and hopefully the moma, it should be awesome. now, to pick a lunch place out of all the positive new yorker reviews i have filed away in my brain...

more sketchy business

Went to Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School again, this time I was joined by my sister, who was in town for the day. This month's model was Mary Widow, who appeared dressed up as, no joke, FREDDY KRUEGER (the burlesque group she is a part of specializes in horror). Unfortunately all the Freddy drawings were 1-minute sketches, so they're not really anything to share here (I'm not even sure what some of them are). But here are some drawings I made this time:

Sorry, this one is a little scary. i drew the tiger and the hoop at the end, I should have probably just left it as it was.

notes:

1. true story. it happened in tower records, ages ago.
2. i still have that jacket and it's really uncomfortable polyester that traps damp air in and makes rainy days even worse. note to self: give to goodwill before it rains again.
3. i never did get one of those jack skellingtons.

sketchy sunday

On the morning of May 10th, also known as Mother's Day, I was on the phone with my mom:

Mom: So, what are you doing today?
Miss Sequential: Oh, there's this drawing class I might go to... It's at a bar, in Allston. It's a life drawing class with burlesque dancer models, and you draw and drink and they take off some clothes. But I dunno.
Mom: I think you have to go and report back!

I couldn't very well ignore my Mom's wishes on Mother's Day, so I made my way over to Great Scott in Allston for the monthly installment of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School. That link is for the original New York event, but the concept is the same: those eager to do some life drawing show up at a local bar, sketchbooks in tow, and draw models (most of whom are dancers in the burlesque scene) for three hours. Catcalling is encouraged. Sometimes there are contests, like "draw this pose, and incorporate an alien." I'd go so far as to say it's the most fun drawing class I've ever been to.

The week I went to class there were only about fifteen people there, but I'm told that it gets pretty crowded when it's not a holiday weekend. Everyone sits around the stage at the back of the bar, sipping drinks, sketching, and chatting with the models. We were lucky to have two excellent models, Voluptuous Rain (who had never modeled before and who asked us to check the score of the Sox game on the bar tv) and Max (who made a bright red terry-cloth thong to wear at his Dr. Sketchy's debut). P.S. Nobody got totally naked.

I'm definitely going back next time, which happens to be this Sunday. I love drawing figures without the pressure of teachers telling me to watch your perspective or think about proportion, or without having to hide my sketchbook from my subjects on the T. Also, more drawing = better comics. My goal for this summer is to get my drawing back in shape. Like bikini season, only less sunburned, and hopefully even more entertaining.
